Ones to watch: Showcase Ireland 2016

Showcase Ireland is an annual trade show in the RDS which showcases hundreds of Irish companies and their products. If, like me, you love products with a story behind them then a morning wandering around the stands is time well spent as there’s talented Irish producers at every turn happy to tell you all about their latest collections, the inspiration behind them, and how they got started making their designs. And those designs can be anything from beautiful knitwear to elegant jewellery, quirky furniture to incredible textile art and everything in between. The show is trade only, though, so here’s a few of the designers that caught my eye.

Here’s my list of ones to watch for 2016:

1. Tory Long – The jeweller who still works full time made an impression at her first Showcase by receiving the prize of category winner in the jewellery Edit. Her jewellery is stylish, beautiful and really affordable for such high quality. I’m a big fan.

2. Whackpack Furniture – No screws, no nails, no fuss, these cleverly made wooden designs is furniture assembling at its finest. So far the collection includes a three-legged stool, a very cool lamp and a brilliant welly stand, and I’m really excited to see more from these guys.

3. Nicola Brown Fine Art Textiles – Beautiful silk, wool and felt that’s been naturally coloured by hand from nature. The colours in Nicola Brown’s designs are like nothing else I’ve seen and one of a kind. I’m particularly excited to see more from her as her homewares line develops.

4. Ansley Watch Co – The only line of fashion watches made in Ireland. That’s a statement, and Ansley Watch Co have the designs to go with it. These watches are beautifully made and really, really on trend.

5. Purcell & Woodcock – An up and coming new lifestyle brand that currently has a beautiful collection of diffusers and candles, Purcell & Woodcock is affordable, quality luxury.

6. Hennessy & Byrne – Beautifully crafted homewares using Connemara Marble, Kilkenny Limestone and Dublin and Wicklow Granite, the napkin rings and marble chopping boards make perfect gifts.

7. Isle Jewellery – A relatively new company based between Belfast and Japan, Isle jewellery is inspired by the landscape of Ireland. The fine gold and silver pendants, rings, bracelets and earrings caught my eye with their edgy, elegant design.

8. Chloe Dowds Ceramics - Chloe’s designs have picked up awards for their quirky look and fine quality and her collection even got a nod at Showcase’s The Edit this year as best in its category.

Plus lots, lots more which I will continue to share here and, as always, in Irish Country Magazine.
