PLATO EBR Company Old Carrick Mill takes Best start Up Business Award at ‘Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur’ Regional Finals

 The 12 nominees were all interviewed by a three member judging panel and had to deliver a business pitch, live. Assessed on criteria such as business innovation, job creation potential and financial planning, the announcement of the national finalists was made at a reception last night at the Nuremore Hotel, Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan.

Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur competition is an integral part of the Action Plan for Jobs 2014 and is supported by the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation through the 31 Local Enterprise Offices around the country.

The Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton T.D. said: “Central to our plans for jobs and growth is supporting more businesses to start-up. Part of this plan is also fostering a stronger culture of entrepreneurship and promoting start-up business as a career option for young people. That is what is behind this new competition to find the best young entrepreneur in the region also ultimately Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur.”

Importantly, over 400 business owners and start-ups from around the country have benefitted from intensive business bootcamps and mentoring programmes at local level, as part of the competition.  Steven Murphy of Old Carrick Mill Distillery, based in Carrickmacross, Monaghan said “We were delighted to receive the County Award and to take another award tonight for Best Start up Business for the North East Region is a fantastic opportunity to represent the Region at the Nationals….we will of course continue to attend our E-tourism PLATO Cluster meeting in preparation for the next stage in the contest”.

Dr Cecilia Hegarty, Director of PLATO EBR also said, “This is a new and exciting competition emerging from the new Local Enterprise Office structures, and congratulations to Briege Quinn, regional coordinator for the Awards in her role in managing the intensive process from Bootcamp to Judging Panel to Awards Dinner”.

PLATO EBR wishes Steven the best of the luck in the next round of the competition. Commiserations to Brendan Magennis, Whackpack (PLATO EBR Cluster company) and Patrick McDermott, Soroson Dental Supplies who also represented Monaghan County in the Regional Finals.
