MJM Group's Founder Brian McConville Provides Leadership and Management Advice to PLATO EBR Companies

23 January 2018

PLATO EBR companies were generally humbled to be in the presence of the great Brian mcConville, Founder of MJM Group and hear his growth story as well as being able to get a behind the scenes look at their production facilities and schedules.

MJM Group was founded by Brian McConville in 1983, and specialises in new build, refurbishment, refit and fit out services to the marine, commercial and private sectors. MJM has completed projects over 5 continents; the company has earned a reputation for consistently high quality finished products/services. It has forged close working relationships with its commercial and marine clients, as well as providing bespoke joinery for office, retail and private residential projects. Brian also bought over struggling Antrim firm Mivan in 2014.

The group of 20 PLATO companies were treated to a brief introductory presentation from Niamh McConville Director and Brian's daughter followed by the warts and all story from Brian, starting as a joiner back in the day, a man with a van and at times an apprentice, he has seen many ups and downs and is on course to grow the company into one of the island's first US$100billion dollar companies. What were his trade secrets?

Brian suggested you need to know a lot about people and be prepared to learn a lot about yourself. The company employs 400 total, 240 acoss MJM Marine and the remainder across Mivan but the Group employs 1000s globally through outsourcing. He admits, he was always thinking ahead but he did not realise it he was being a strategic thinker or acting strategically. Brian recalled he often has faced opposition as he constantly challenges his team and his clients, "you got to have a vision and a rough idea of how you tihnk you might get there. Everyone has a different view to success, I like to keep pushing, remember you cannot push a team if you are not pushing yourself and you should be employing/directing people that are smarter than you". The attending businesses were reminded to have a vision, set goals and be prepared to work "damn hard" to achieve them.

The MJM Group turned over £80million last year and £90million is forecasted for 2018 - but Brian was careful to remind the group that turnover is vanity and it is "what is left behind that is important". During quesitoning Brian was asked about growth through acquisition, leadership and organisational culture, team organisation and new site, production and supply chain development.

Brian and 4 of his staff toured the factory site with the PLATO companies demonstrating product lines, machinery and workflow and answering all our questions.

PLATO EBR would like to thank Brian and his team for hosting the Site Visit and for MJM Group's ongoing commitment to PLATO EBR including hosting the Newry Mourne and Down District Cluster on site for monthly meetings.
