Small Business Owner Programme    Learning from Large Enterprise

The PLATO EBR Programme will bring together owner-managers of growth-seeking businesses from the Mid-Ulster District Council to:-

  • Strengthen their own management and development capacity through shared  learning from similar businesses and larger SMEs/multi-nationals from the Council area;

  • Strategically plan for business growth, especially working across borders, by finding out what are the practical steps for business development for your business and how to avoid the pitfalls.

  • Develop individual business improvement plans as part of an action strategy for growth.

PLATO EBR is a tried and tested licensed Networking Programme where small growth-oriented companies share knowledge and resources from like-minded individuals in diverse industry sectors with the additional benefit of two larger ‘Parent companies’ facilitating and leading the monthly meetings. These ‘parent’ companies are leaders in their industry sectors, and support the programme by sharing their skills and experience within the network. The Mid-Ulster PLATO EBR Programme is due to commence Jan 2018, there is a membership cost of Euro300, Programme is heavily subsidised by Council. In addition to monthly meets, there will be additional opportunity to network with 90 companies involved in PLATO Programmes throughout the EBR Region through a training programme, a site visit programme and inter-regional events.

PLATO EBR companies tend to be micro- and/or small businesses interested in growing their business and learning from larger companies who have grown their company within the region. These larger ‘parent’ companies are leaders in their industry sectors, and support the programme by sharing their skills and experience within the network. There will be two senior executives (or the owner/manager) at each meeting – the same individuals for the programme duration. In the past, Parent companies across the Region have included for example Martin McVicar of Combilift, Paul Shortt of Castlecool, Jim Loughran of Kingspan, Brinan McConville of MJM Marine and many more – a number are under consideration for Mid-Ulster. The meetings will take place monthly and will follow a structured programme (agreed at the outset with participants) and focus on the challenges to growth for small companies in the region. The network will provide a sounding board and a support forum for entrepreneurs working out on their own facing similar challenges to business development. The network is centred on a peer to peer learning environment with the regional agencies/Council rowing in behind the network to offer additional supports.

PLATO EBR is currently funded through the four Local Enterprises Offices and County Councils in Cavan, Louth, Meath and Monaghan and three Northern Ireland partners of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council and Mid-Ulster District Council.
